Yes, it's true The Mole is finally returning! Will Anderson Cooper
(right) give up his CNN gig to host again? And did the writers'
strike bring us our beloved Mole back?
ABC aired two seasons of the show between 2001 and 2002 with Anderson
Cooper as the tongue-in-cheek host. Ahmad Rashad took over for
Anderson for the two Celebrity Mole shows that aired in 2003 and
2004. Neither Anderson Cooper (who's undoubtedly a bit out of ABC's
price range now) nor Ahmad Rashad is returning to host. ABC is
currently casting a new host. Scott Stone of Stone Stanley
Productions, the producers of the show, says that, "We're looking for
someone in the Anderson mode, a little mysterious but full of comedy.
It could be a breakout role for someone."
The revived show will feature regular players not D-list celebs.
Scott Stone says that, "We simplified [the show] to where the people
at home can play along." Hopefully, the producers can simplify the
show without losing its intellectual edge.
Did the writers' strike bring us back our beloved Mole? Not
according to ABC executive John Saade, who says, "This is a show we
honestly love and people ask us about all the time. We were looking
to bring the show back even when the writers were working." Variety
says that the long gap between seasons was actually caused by issues
over rights to the show, which had reverted back to TTTI, a Belgian
company that owns the format. Scott Stone closed the new deal about
two months ago to allow production of the U.S. show to begin again.
The Mole should appear on our screens this summer or fall. So rev up
your brains and get prepared to join me later this year as we
collectively try to figure out once again who is the mole in our
midst!
